The Hidden Biases of AI: What Disabled Job Seekers Need to Know

Today, I’m diving into something that's been on my mind a lot lately: the role of artificial intelligence in hiring. AI has completely changed how we hire, making things quicker and more efficient than ever before. But as we jump on the AI bandwagon, we also need to talk about its potential downsides, especially when it comes to disabled candidates.

AI tools, like ChatGPT, have made hiring a lot smoother. They can zip through resumes, spotlight the good stuff, and flag any issues, making HR's job a lot easier. According to Bloomberg’s Sarah Green Carmichael, “Nearly half of recent hires used AI to apply for jobs, according to a survey by Resume Builder.” This is pretty huge, right? But let’s not kid ourselves—AI has its flaws.

A recent article by Gus Alexiou in Forbes highlighted an experiment by University of Washington researchers that found AI tools could be biased against resumes that mention disability. They compared a standard CV with six different versions, each highlighting different disability-related achievements. The results were pretty shocking: ChatGPT only ranked the disability-modified CVs higher than the control one 25% of the time. This means many qualified disabled candidates might be overlooked.

Commenting on the UW project, lead author Kate Glazko said, “Ranking resumes with AI is starting to proliferate, yet there’s not much research behind whether it’s safe and effective…. For a disabled job seeker, there’s always this question when you submit a resume of whether you should include disability credentials. I think disabled people consider that even when humans are the reviewers.” These types of biases often prevent disclosure of disability in the workplace, in all aspects—from being a candidate to an employee. Both humans and AI still have inherent biases that must be accounted for, and that starts with awareness and diverse perspectives in looking at the data.

This is where human oversight comes in. AI can help with hiring, but it shouldn’t replace human judgment. It’s like using a calculator—you need to understand the math first to know if the calculator’s answer is right. We still need humans to ensure that the AI’s decisions make sense. And even then, nothing is foolproof.

Survey data showed that many job seekers still needed to tweak their AI-generated content to avoid sounding like a robot, with 46% saying they edited the output “some” and only 1% not editing it at all. So, while AI is a handy tool, we can’t trust it blindly—whether you’re an applicant or a hiring manager.

As we move forward, we need to balance the speed and efficiency of AI with the essential human touch. Using AI as a tool rather than a replacement will help us create hiring practices that truly value the contributions of disabled candidates.

Living with cerebral palsy, I've encountered many forms of gatekeeping that undermine my lived experience. Despite decades of progress and the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act turning 34 this year, our community continues to face skepticism and discrimination, often because we don’t fit society's narrow view of what disability should look like.

Paul Castle, a blind artist and illustrator, encapsulates a critical point when he says, "Blindness is a spectrum." Castle and his guide dog, Mr. Maple, were recently denied entry to a Seattle restaurant because an employee didn't believe Mr. Maple was a real service animal. The employee's reasoning? "You don't look blind," he told Castle, per CBS News. This statement underscores a broader issue: the public's limited understanding of disabilities, which often leads to harmful gatekeeping.

Disability manifests in countless ways, both visible and invisible. As someone who uses a wheelchair and a service dog, along with chronic pain, I've seen firsthand how quickly people are to judge based on appearances. The reality is, disabilities are as diverse as the people who live with them. They can vary not just from person to person but even within the same individual over time.

The Daily Dot reports, Katie, a TikTok user with a service dog, shared a harrowing experience at a JCPenney store. During a medical episode, a fellow shopper harassed her, questioning why she needed a service dog and even suggesting she was "in the way." Katie’s service dog was assisting her, but the woman insisted, "You don't look like you need a service dog." This incident again highlights the everyday struggles we face, constantly defending our needs against ignorance and prejudice.

Such encounters are not isolated. They reflect a systemic issue where ableism and medical gatekeeping prevent us from accessing the rights and accommodations to which we are legally entitled. This attitude perpetuates discrimination and hinders true inclusion. We need to shift the narrative from suspicion and doubt to understanding and acceptance.

To combat this, we need stronger laws protecting the rights of people with disabilities and better public education about the spectrum of disabilities. Educating the public about the ADA and the legal rights of service dog handlers is essential. We must urge legislators to enforce existing laws more strictly and to consider new measures that protect us from discrimination and harassment.

As I reflect on these stories, I am reminded of the resilience of our community and the importance of continuing the fight for equity and inclusion. We must break down these barriers and educate others about the true nature of disabilities. Disclosing our disability is not for style points or sympathy. We share so that you'll understand, and most importantly, believe us.

As we kick off 2024 and you officially hang up your service dog vest and trade it in for a well-deserved life of leisure, sprawled out on your deluxe Big Barker dog bed (a far cry from our early training days), I can't help but reminisce about our adventures - filled with advocacy, more than a few antics, and remarkable achievements.

Let's rewind to our first public outing, shall we? Ah, Potbelly Sandwich Works. The scene of the 'Great Sandwich Heist'. You, the dapper dog, thought it'd be hilarious to leap at the counter as if it had whispered sweet nothings to you. Me? I'm trying to play it cool, thinking, "Is this a test? Did Canine Companions® teach him this?" You were testing my handling skills, and I was trying not to crack up.

Then came our crusade for change. Your charm and intelligence were pivotal in spearheading policy changes with giants like Uber, Lyft, and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). You weren’t just a cute face; you were a force to be reckoned with and always camera ready for maximum impact. Your presence alone was enough to turn boardroom discussions into action plans for more inclusive and accessible spaces.

And let's not forget our victories with Starbucks and Petco. Your tail-wagging enthusiasm and our relentless advocacy turned everyday into an adventure. We made those spaces not just accessible, but welcoming for people like us and the 42 million disabled people nationwide.

Through it all, you've been my biggest support against chronic pain and my secret weapon in advocating for a world that sees wheels and paws not as limitations, but as badges of honor. You've wagged, I've wheeled, and together, we've been unstoppable.

As you embark on this new chapter of couch surfing and treat tasting, remember, retirement doesn't mean you're out of the game. It just means you're playing in a new, comfier league. And as for me, I'll keep the advocacy torch burning, inspired by your legacy – a legacy that includes an impressive record of sandwiches stolen and right from under my nose.

Here's to you, Pico. For the laughter, the achievements, and the unwavering companionship. You're more than a service dog; you're a trailblazer, a friend, and the best pup I could have asked for. Enjoy every moment of your retirement – you've earned it, buddy.

Empowerment on Four Legs: Celebrating National Service Dog Month

Yesterday, I was honored to witness the formal recognition of National Service Dog Month by the Council of the District of Columbia, a testament to the incredible work of organizations like Canine Companions®.

Since its inception in 1975, they have placed 7,454 graduate teams. Just this year, 413 working dog teams have been placed, and there are currently 2,706 active graduate teams nationwide. Behind these numbers are countless stories of individuals finding newfound independence and confidence, thanks to their service dogs.

But these achievements aren't just the result of the organization's efforts alone. A vast network of 4,700 active volunteers nationwide, including 1,292 volunteer puppy raisers and 138 volunteer breeder caretakers, contribute to this mission. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting Jaime Werner, a volunteer puppy raiser whose dedication ensures that service dogs like Pico are well-trained and ready to assist individuals like me. She is currently raising her sixth dog, Boston.

Councilwoman Brooke Pinto's introduction of this legislation is a significant step forward in recognizing the importance of service dogs in our community. Navigating the world with myriad disabilities can be tricky, and Pico has been instrumental in my daily life.

As we celebrate National Service Dog Month, let's remember that independence shouldn't be limited. Every individual, regardless of their challenges, deserves the chance to lead a life with greater autonomy. And with the support of service dogs and the organizations that train them, this vision is becoming a reality for many.

Why Relaxed Dress Codes Can Be a Game-Changer for People with Disabilities

In light of the recent changes to the Senate's dress code, as detailed by Axios and Rolling Stone, it's essential to view this shift as more than just a fashion statement. This change, announced by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and reportedly inspired by Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, is a reflection of a reasonable accommodation for someone with a disability.

Sen. Fetterman, who has been candid about his struggles with depression, is protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Changes to dress codes are considered a reasonable accommodation, and this should be seen as a progressive step for the disability community. Societal standards, often set by non-disabled neurotypical individuals, can be both physically and mentally taxing for those with disabilities. As someone with cerebral palsy and fine motor challenges, I can attest to the significant energy and mental effort required to don formal attire. My clothing choices are often a reflection of my energy levels, not my work ethic or capability.

Senator Susan Collins humorously threatened to wear a bikini to work in response to the relaxed dress code. Meanwhile, Senator Schumer officially altered the rules around appropriate attire, instructing the Sergeant at Arms to cease enforcing guidelines requiring business attire on the floor. This change allows lawmakers like Pennsylvania’s John Fetterman to embrace casual clothing without violating protocol. Fetterman's attire has been a part of his image throughout his political career. After taking a medical hiatus to seek treatment for clinical depression, he's chosen comfort over costume. This decision, though not directly referencing Fetterman, has irked some Republicans, leading to criticism of him.

In the disability community, we often use "spoons" as a metaphor to describe our energy consumption. It can take someone with a disability significantly more energy to accomplish the same tasks as our non-disabled counterparts. A strict dress code can be challenging for people with disabilities to maintain consistently. My personal experience of ditching formal wear for the office has resulted in increased energy that I can redirect toward my actual work. Being comfortable allows me to be more relaxed and focused. I applaud Senator Schumer for his recent decision and hope that those opposing this change can learn empathy.

With the recent news out of California surrounding regulations for autonomous vehicles, I’ve been thinking a lot about the future of transportation and the intersection of independence, safety, and innovation. Autonomous vehicles have the power to be transformative, and their impact and inclusion needs to be assessed from all sides.

The rise of robotaxis in cities like San Francisco has sparked a myriad of opinions. Sharon Giovinazzo, CEO of the nonprofit LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, told The San Francisco Standard, “It truly has the power to transform lives.”

For many of us with mobility challenges, the promise of a vehicle that doesn't fuss about Canine Companions® Pico or require assistance for boarding is tantalizing. It represents more than just transportation; it's a symbol of independence and choice.

However, my experiences with rideshare companies like Lyft and Uber have not always been smooth. I've faced challenges, from drivers refusing rides because of my service dog to the sheer lack of accessible vehicles. These experiences underscore the need for more inclusive transportation solutions.

Yet, the promise of choice is also fraught with other practical considerations. The California Council of the Blind has voiced concerns about passenger safety, especially for the visually impaired. They believe that the technology needs to advance further to ensure rider safety. As someone who relies heavily on assistive technology, I understand the importance of ensuring that these vehicles are not just innovative but also safe and reliable.

But there's hope on the horizon. Companies like Cruise are actively working on developing wheelchair-accessible vehicles, like the Origin Mobility. This is a step in the right direction, ensuring that the future of transportation is inclusive.

As we stand on the cusp of this transportation revolution, it's crucial to ensure that the voices of the disability community are not just heard but actively included in the conversation. After all, for many of us, it's not just about getting from point A to B; it's about doing so with dignity, independence, and safety.

Ableism: The Unseen Challenge in the Life of Disabled Individuals

Today I want to talk about ableism, a societal bias that favors able-bodied individuals and often results in discrimination against disabled people.

Ableism is pervasive and often subtle, making it a difficult challenge to overcome. As Andrew Pulrang writes in Forbes, "Most disabled people...know that they can run into ableism any day, any time, in any situation." This includes "awkward or insulting encounters" that can ruin an otherwise accessible event or outing.

From my personal experience, I can attest to the truth of Pulrang's words. As a wheelchair user with a visual impairment and an awesome service dog, (thanks, Canine Companions® Pico!), I've faced my share of ableist comments and attitudes. These experiences are not isolated incidents but part of a broader societal issue that needs addressing.

In academia, where I first learned to advocate for myself, I encountered resistance to providing accommodations that would level the playing field. The argument was that these accommodations provided an "unfair advantage." But this perspective is rooted in ableism, failing to recognize that these accommodations merely provide equal access to education.

Data from the Pew Research Center shows that 7.3 million disabled students in the U.S. are served under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This act guarantees the right to free public education and appropriate special education services. Yet, despite these protections, disabled students often have to fight for their rights to be upheld.

The fight against ableism extends beyond the classroom into every aspect of daily life. From navigating physical spaces to dealing with bureaucratic hurdles, people with disabilities must constantly strategize and plan for obstacles that others may not even consider.

This Disability Pride Month, let's commit to fostering a more inclusive and understanding society. Let's challenge ableist attitudes and work toward creating environments where people of all abilities can thrive without having to fight for their rights continually.

Remember, disability rights are human rights. Let's end ableism, promote inclusion, and celebrate diversity. Together, we can create a world that truly values and respects all of its citizens.

The ADA Under Siege? What the Supreme Court’s Latest Ruling Means for Disability Rights

The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn race-conscious admissions in colleges has left me, as a disability advocate, deeply concerned. The ruling, which challenges affirmative action, makes me wonder: What does this mean for other minority groups, especially the disabled community?

With this ruling, the Supreme Court continues its historic march backward on civil rights; seemingly hellbent on taking them all back piece by piece.

Will Hild of Consumers'​ Research told The Washington Post the ruling “will put the wind in the sails of groups like ours, who want to get the woke, racially based hiring and promotion schemes out of corporate America.” This statement raises alarm bells. If the court is willing to challenge affirmative action, is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) next?

Furthermore, Hild mentions that legal precedents allowing race-conscious admissions have been a “fig leaf” for private sector diversity initiatives. With this ruling, he predicts a “free-for-all on pushing back against that.” This suggests that the ruling could embolden challenges to diversity initiatives across the board, including those aimed at disability inclusion.

In a scorching dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor stated that “the devastating impact of this decision cannot be overstated.” She added that the decision “cements a superficial rule of colorblindness as a constitutional principle in an endemically segregated society where race has always mattered and continues to matter.”

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, wrote in her dissent that “it would be deeply unfortunate if the Equal Protection Clause actually demanded this perverse, ahistorical, and counterproductive outcome.”

The ADA has been a cornerstone for disability rights, ensuring equal opportunities for people like me. I am one of the 61 million disabled adults in the United States. As a wheelchair user and service dog handler to Canine Companions® Pico, the ADA has been instrumental in my life. But this ruling might embolden groups to challenge not just racial diversity but diversity as a whole.

We must remain vigilant and proactive. The progress we’ve made in disability rights is monumental, but it’s also fragile. We must ensure that this ruling does not become a precedent for eroding the protections that the ADA provides.

As we enter Disability Pride Month, as we celebrate Independence Day, we must not become complacent. I urge you all to stay informed, engage in discussions, and stand up for the rights of all minority groups. Our diversity is our strength. Let’s protect it.

Leveling the Academic Field: The Role of AI for Students with Disabilities

Navigating academia with multiple disabilities, including a visual impairment presented significant challenges. AI tools like ChatGPT offer an exciting possibility — they have the potential to level the playing field for individuals with disabilities. However, as Sam Altman CEO of OpenAI, and Mira Murati, the company’s CTO, recently highlighted in a joint statement, these AI tools also pose potential risks.

More than 350 people signed a statement released by the Center for AI Safety, an organization working to reduce AI risks, The Wall Street Journal reports.

I recall my college days at Loyola Marymount University, where a professor, Todd Shoepe, acknowledging my disability, allowed me to use color copies of diagrams for tests while my classmates were given black and white photocopies. This was not an unfair advantage; it was necessary for me to properly express my understanding of the material.

However, the guidelines governing the use of AI tools like ChatGPT are still under development. Casey Boyle Director of the Digital Writing and Research Lab at the The University of Texas at Austin told The Chronicle of Higher Education, “People are really focused, for good reasons, on academic integrity and academic honesty, and trying to redefine what that means with these new tools.” Yet, I worry this might become another excuse to deny accommodations under the guise of "unfair advantage".

Students with disabilities often face an uphill struggle in academia. Boyle rightly points out, “Students with disabilities or students who require accommodations are already working uphill. When we overreact, we’re increasing the slope of those hills.” Denying the use of AI tools like ChatGPT, despite the caution surrounding the technology, would only make this climb steeper.

AI tools can assist students with mobility challenges by eliminating the need for physical trips to libraries. They can help students who struggle with initiating conversations — such as those on the autism spectrum — by suggesting conversation starters. And for students who battle the "terror of the blank page," generative AI tools could suggest an opening paragraph to get the creative process started.

I implore educators to consider AI tools as allies, not enemies. Professor Manjeet Rege of the University of St. Thomas suggests, “I really want you as a student to do that critical thinking and not give me content produced by an AI… if you would like to take aspects of that, put it into a generative AI model and then look at analogies to help you understand that better, yes, absolutely, that is something that I encourage.”

Despite these uncertainties, I remain hopeful. Just as my professor at LMU understood and defended my need for accommodations, I hope educators will recognize the significant value AI tools like ChatGPT can offer those with disabilities.
